Changing my pen hold and/or angle might have worked, but in the course of trying to regain a legible hand, I switched to being an underwriter, which solved everything nicely (wasn't hard to do, even though I'd been writing overhanded all my life). Every lefthander finds his or her own way I think you're on the right track to stick with the nib width you prefer. Regarding fountain pens for lefties, I've read advice to get fine points (to minimize smudging) or to get medium points (to increase flow) or even to buy a nib with a kugel point (yeah, like there are so many). I'd get ink on the side of the pinkie, though. Looks, from your photo, like I was holding the pen like you do, over/sideways. You could try experimenting with writing angles, holds, and the slant of your paper to see if altering them will better help you locate the sweet spot. It took awhile (we're talking a couple years, what with having gel and liquid pens around - hey, I was really really busy at work) for me to realize that with stress and writing hurriedly at work, a bit of a hook had become incorporated in my pen-holding. ![]() Then several years ago I started having flow problems with rollerballs as well as fountain pens. When younger, I wrote overhanded but without a hook. (edited to actually add the image, sheesh!) Edited Octoby ScottT I'm not adverse to sending the pens away for a little nib work, but I need to know what to ask for and the first question I would guess is what type of writer I am, under.etc, hence the original question. I know this must be a really basic question, but I can't find the answer. Obviously from the pic I am a leftie, which doesn't seem to help me much when it comes to fountain pens or calligraphy. I assume pushing the nib away from me (left to right, down to up) will be 'rougher' than pulling it towards me, but I would certainly appreciate some advice. It seems what is smooth in one direction is not necessarily smooth in the opposite. I'm wondering if the way I hold the pens is contributing to my trouble in finding the spots. The pens write well, but I'm still searching for the sweet spots. ![]() I've got two Cross Townsend FPs and really like them. ![]()
